Finding Frugal Again

A couple of blogs back I talked about how we were in transition regarding food. Well, this transition has been very pricey. Honestly, we can't afford it. Found that out the hard way. Now it's back to tightening the belt and trying to figure out how to be healthy AND frugal.

One way to do that for us is making our own laundry detergent. I've heard mixed reviews but we seem to do OK with it. Mostly our clothes look pretty clean. I occasionally use spot remover and bleach on whites. Still come out spending much less.

Here's the shelf in our laundry room:
Everything on that shelf didn't cost as much as a big box of Tide laundry detergent. We use the vinegar for softening, Felsnaptha soap, washing soda and borax for making the detergent, Castille soap for making other cleaners, bleach for whitening... and all that will last a very long time!

Today I had to make laundry soap. I love the way the Felsnaptha looks when it's all shredded.
It also smells really good! It's not time consuming either. It's easy to make quick work out of it.

Here's the big 5 gallon bucket I put our laundry detergent in:

I keep the measuring cup on top for easy access and the concentrated mix in a jar for spot treatment.. as well as a spot remover spray hanging on the wire rack. There's a bag of clothes pins hanging there as well for when it's nice enough to hang laundry out.

Simple stuff.. and very frugal.

  1. I love the title of this post & I've lurked on your site a few times, so I figured it was time to drop a line :) I hope I don't step on toes, but I thought I'd mention extreme couponing (I'm sure you've seen the show or heard it mentioned). I've just started really getting into it, have a tiny stockpile compared to most, but it's really helped in the budget (or atleast, per item; I tend to stock up when I can get things so cheap, so maybe it doesn't help out the budget THAT much, lol). My favorite blog is FreeTastesGood.com. She does all the store ads/coupon match-ups so I can just go through her lists and pick out what I need. I also have friends I swap coupons with or who save their whole inserts for me so I can get multiples. Let me know if you would like me to add you to our coupon swap group on facebook (just send me an email) for more ideas & tips. I hope you don't mind me posting all this on here; feel free to delete, but I wanted to share as I'm right there with you on trying to live sustainably, healthy & frugally :) (Now if only I could get around to making my own laundry detergent.... )
